Freedom of the Press Under Fire: A Battle for the First Amendment

Hilton Atlanta Hotel | April 6-8, 2018

The once trusted institution of journalism is under constant attack. Those who cover impactful stories are often branded with catchphrases like “fake news” or have their credibility questioned. In this conference, we explore the effect of efforts to undermine the media while providing vital information to help journalists do a better job of uncovering the truth.

The conference is set in the historic city of Atlanta, GA and coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of one of the greatest champions of truth Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will examine his life, legacy and the struggles that open the door for so many. Join us as we work within this noteworthy city in the civil rights movement to understand the gains and losses in the decades following the passing of an icon.

We are glad to welcome back Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) for a special workshop offering critical tools for investigating reporting. Attendees of this one day workshop one day workshop on Friday, April 6th will get a special certification and a one-year membership in IRE.

We are also proud to add a Google Lab training led by former NABJ VP of Digital. Participants will receive special certification. Programming under development now will include special one on one sessions for emerging journalists, media entrepreneurship, developing digital, and sports journalism from the inside.

The Atlanta Hilton, 255 Courtland Street NE is our host hotel. We have secured a room rate of $99 a night for registered attendees arriving as early as April 2nd. Reservations must be made by March 12th.

Special thanks to our sponsors who have already committed to support this conference. Wells Fargo is a returning sponsor partner. AIDS Healthcare Foundation and it’s Black Leadership AIDS Crisis Coalition are returning sponsors. They are also providing four $250 sponsorships for attendees. More information on enrolling is coming soon.
